Jimmy's Cast

Last weekend, Jimmy and Gary went ice skating for the school skate night. Jimmy took a big fall on his elbow and cried pretty hard. When he got home, he told me "My arm hurts pretty bad so I'm not going to move it for 8 days." He didn't complain anymore, but he didn't really use his arm. So yesterday I figured there might be something wrong and got an appointment at the doctor today. Ta da! After 2 appointments and x-rays, he has a lovely new red cast, to be worn for the next 6 weeks. His arm is fractured at the base of his upper arm bone. He already feels better from it, as his arm is protected against jostling and banging now. But now I feel like a terrible parents leaving it so long!

What a cutie so proud of his cast! I'm so glad that it is feeling better now. It's so hard to know with kids illnesses and injuries what to worry about and what to not so please don't feel guilty!

Here is a much belated update on Jimmy's arm.
He can move it just fine now. The fracture healed perfectly.
He had 3 casts, red, blue and glow in the dark. He was very protective of the casts and would not let anyone sign them, no matter how much they begged (believe me, I really wanted to sign the cast but he wouldn't let me!) The glow in the dark one was very impressive and glowed brilliantly for hours in total darkness.
The casts often itched (benadryl helped.) Jimmy was very careful and considerate not to bang others with the cast.
It was all worth it so that he could be out of pain and completely healed.
PS as an aside: if you or your child has an arm cast, use a table cloth or something to protect the table top: the cast is rough and will, over time, remove the finish from the wood.
